About The Woodlawn

The Woodlawn sits on a single stretch of Fredericksburg Road in San Antonio’s Deco District, its neon marquee still lighting the street the way it has for generations. The theatre at its centre was designed by renowned theatre architect John Eberson and opened in 1945; the Art Deco lines of the facade have defined this corner of the city ever since.

Today the building is home to eight independent businesses. On one block you can play a board game over a craft beer, dig through new vinyl, catch a touring band or a drag show, sit through a stand-up set in a 1,000-seat historic theatre, try on vintage, work through the afternoon over coffee, and lock yourself into a horror escape room — then walk twenty steps and do something else entirely.

That mix is the point. The Woodlawn isn’t a mall or a chain development; it’s a row of small operators who chose the same old building, and the result is a block with more going on per square foot than almost anywhere else in the city.
